Green Energy is a program developed by Girl Scouts of Genesee Valley to stimulate girls’ interest in the engineering profession.  Designed for girls in grades 9-12, Green Energy will provide authentic engineering experiences that will increase girls’ knowledge of engineering concepts and practices and provide numerous leadership and career development opportunities.

Green Energy is a multi-year program that will explore alternative methods of energy generation at Camp Pinewood, a GSWNY-owned camp near Dansville.  The camp is in need of improvements in fuel consumption and water control and possesses many of the same needs and characteristics of a small village, including residential units, utilities (e.g., electricity, water, heating, communication, sewers, and security), transportation, and health care facilities.

While the project will require several years to complete, each project year is designed as a “stand alone” opportunity.  Continued participation will be encouraged, but is not required.  In 2008-2009, girls will investigate possible renewable energy alternatives and make a recommendation to the council’s Board of Directors for implementation in subsequent project years.  Funding for Year 1 has been provided by a STEM Career Exploration Fund grant received from Girl Scouts of the USA and Lockheed Martin.
Girl Scouts Green Energy Project
A special project in partnership with Girl Scouts, R.I.T. and the U of R
Green Energy was developed with guidance from Ms. Lisa Norwood, Assistant Dean of the University of Rochester’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.  The Society of Women Engineers is a project partner, helping to identify professional engineering mentors who will work with girls through all program activities.

Approximately 45 girls living throughout the council’s five county jurisdiction area (Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, and Wyoming Counties) will be able to participate in the Green Energy program.  Girls from underserved populations, including the City of Rochester and rural areas to the west of Rochester, will be targeted for participation.  Transportation will be available for these girls in order to facilitate their participation.
